Gday all, I just spoke to a ford dealership about replacing the front Cam chain tensioner on the 4.0 SOHC, they guy asked me why I was not doing the rear at the same time, I replied “don’t you need to pull the motor to do that”, He said “NO only if you want to do the chains and guides as well we can replace both front and rear cam tensioners and manifold O rings seals for $750AUS”.

Now I was all ready to do it myself as I was expecting a change of $1000 to do the front only but for $750 for both the hell with it they can do it and at least then I get warranty on the parts/ Job.

Has this always been the case that you can do the tensioners Front and rear; I thought you could only do the front with the engine in the car.

I felt like a bit of a dick as when he tried telling me that I could do them both with the engine in the car I all but shut him down over it :o .

I have mentioned both cam tensioners before. The tensioners stick out the side of each head, all you see is what looks like a very large bolt head.

Wow, that price is massive. I'd do it for $300, including the parts. The tensioners only cost about $25 or so. The one recall TSB includes the front tensioner, o-rings, and a check valve to maintain oil when off.

Skip the dealership, do them yourself. It's a few hour job. The task of pulling the intake is very involved, watch all of the connections, lines, etc. Look at the passenger head, on the outer side near the back, just rear of the last spark plug boot. The tensioners should be torqued to 42lbs/ft I recall. Good luck,

that sounds way cheap, i think 750 in parts is more like it. Ford melbourne charged me about $300 in parts for one tensioner.

It may only cost $25 in the US but no way it’s that cheep in Australia. We also have no other option than to buy parts from a dealer with explorers unless we what to Ship them over with the Ford parts network.

The other issue is I don’t have a toque wrench available to me that reads that low, I kid you not the smallest one we have at work is about 3½ Ft long and it’s lowest reading is like 120. I also understand that if you don’t get the washer or something sitting right it will leak oil like noting else??.

Rmknight, It’s 750 for the entire job, I am Ok to pay $750 for it they are a dealer after all. They are the cheapest I have come across as well the fist Job I had them do the price was $120 cheaper then another dealer. Last year I was quoted $800 to do the front tensioner only from another Ford dealer.

its a real shame we are not in the U.S, they get all the best and cheap stuff, i have lived in new york and texas for 7 years and loved it. and i re-built a mustang v8 engine over there with all new parts except the block for about $1000, that was a fun project - i have pics somewhere.

Yeah don’t get me wrong I love Australia and don’t think there is any place else in the world I would rather live. But gee it would be nice to get parts for the same price as the do in the U.S not to mention fuel for the same price as the do.

or just be able to transport your car over there and do want you want and bring it back.... cheap. maybe have a big highway over the ocean. i would drive there!@
