My '91 4x4 has a tick in it. It has 145,000 miles on. I was thinking about pulling the engine and putting rings and bearings in also. What is a good cam to use? I drive this everyday and hardly ever go off road. I thought about buying one from a dealer, but if y'all know of a better cam let me know.
Thanks for the help!

red,

Sounds like lifter problems. Cam probably ok but you will need new lifters. Vanir has good price on a set it seems.

Cams are avail from Comp Cams, Cam Craft, Vanir Performance.

I have been in the process of doing exactly what you propose(since Jan actually- moving really slow due to work, school, family etc etc.)

Cam from Comp Cams 410-8 is a mild upgrade add 15hp and 18ft/lbs, moves the power band up about 400rpm. You need to use longer pushrods with the new cam and the length will depend on whether the heads and/or block have been milled.
It uses the stock roller lifters, and the stock springs can be used if they check out. costs $230-$280 (its a roller cam you know!)

Check the rocker arms and shafts while your at it. I am replacing the shafts and rockers, timing chain and gears, tensioners. No skimping- Im not taking this engine out again in a few months

Hope that helps some
