It's a '98 Mountaineer with the 5.0.
Check engine light has been on since I got it a couple days ago. Under heavy acceleration when fully warmed up, I had a misfire which also caused an exhaust leak (I think).
I noticed it when I had to take off pretty hard after a car popped up over a hill going pretty fast. It was definetly missing but the exhaust also got noticably louder during the missfire. Got up to speed and everything smoothed out. Exhaust was quiet again. Took off again and it was missing at anything over 1/2 throttle with a loud exhaust. I pulled over, shut off the engine, waited a couple seconds and started it back up. By this time I was annoyed and took off hard, accelerated fine with a quiet exhaust. But it would act up if a kept beating on it. I scanned the CEL and it brought up a cam sensor code and P1405 (DPF EGR something or other, I don't remember).

From my experience, a cam sensor going bad causes hard starts and inoperative tachometer. DPFE causes CEL's. That's all I know about those. But I had no codes for a misfire.

I know that I desperatley need spark plugs and wires (wires say 1998 on them). I didn't pull the plug for fear of damaging the old wires and not having the money to replace them right now. But I looked around the plug for blackness for a possible compression leak around a plug. This would cause a miss and a loud exhaust sound. Everything looked fine there.

So, how could a misfire cause an exhaust leak when the exhaust is newer and has no signs of a leak anywhere? Why does my miss disappear after shutting off the engine for a few seconds? And what else should I check out?

Sorry for the long post, just had to list all the details that I could think of.

For the exhaust leak, check the flex pipe that goes from the manifold to the egr valve. As far as the misfire, you will need to do a tuneup.

already checked that tube, no signs of a leak. I just don't understand why it only sounds like a leak when it misfires.
