Just curious about camshaft selections for the OHV 4.0. I have to put a new engine in and would like to put a few engine modifications in there before dropping it in. I was looking at the CompCam 270 HR cam and wondering if anyone has had experience with it or any others?

Also, may look at adding some JBA Headers. Any comments or recommendations on that front?

i have herd about people choosing a cam called a 410. not sure about specs or brand. Thats soemthing to search

There are two different camshafts available for the OHV 4.0, commonly refered to as the 410 and 422 because of their Comp Cams part numbers, 49-410-8 and 49-422-8.

The 410 cam is a great stock replacement cam and can be used with stock valve springs but longer pushrods are required, 5.550 is the length you'll need.

The 422 is a high end camshaft with more lift and duration. The 422 is a great cam but is aimed more at the hp curve then the low end torque range. Longer pushrods are required with this camshaft along with aftermarket springs.

For a daily driver Explorer I would go with the 410, and unless you plan on porting your heads and going all out then I would stick with your stock exhaust manifolds too. Headers can hurt more then help when your looking for power down low and they are expensive to boot.

Later Doug.
