Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and also new to the 4.0 SOHC. I'm putting one together for my dad at this time. I'm a little stumped on the whole cam timing. I have the OTC 6488 tool kit, and am fairly positive I'm using it correctly. My question is, when I have it all back together like the timing kit shows, I'm not 100% confident its right. When I roll the motor over by hand, it seems the #1 intake valve closes at the same time the piston reaches TDC. I just don't see how this is correct? Has anyone ever had this same issue? Or is it correct? I cant see how it would be but I am open to suggestions. Thanks much!

camshaft timing slot position

When piston 1 is at TDC on the compression stroke the camshaft position sensor "nub" on the left (driver side) camshaft (blue arrow) will be above the camshaft axis.

The timing slot on the end of both camshafts will be parallel to the head surface that mates with the valve cover.

I suggest that you confirm both camshafts are correctly oriented before cranking the engine. If you PM me your email address I'll send you a copy of the engine assembly instructions that contain diagrams of how and when to install the timing kit tools.

Yes, the slots in the cams are parallel to the head. Sending a pm thanks!

below the axis

I forgot to mention that the slot must be below the axis of the camshaft. The large circular segment should be on top and the small circular segment on the bottom. Otherwise the camshafts are 180 deg out of time.
Instructions have been sent.

Dale, thanks again for your expertise. The engine is now together and all set.
