I have a 97 I recently through a rod or something. I bought a new truck so this one is just a project now I am just going to replace the engine. I was gona buy a 4.0 efi from the junkyard for $500 but I can buy a 302 out of a 97 with less miles for the same price. Will the trany in my 97 4.0 work with the 97 302 v8 engine or do i need a trany also thats an extra $350 I dont want to spend. Thanks

No, they won't work together. You also need more then just the tranny out of the V8 truck. The ECM/GEM/Engine wiring harness are also part of the deal. I'm pretty sure you'll need to do something about T-case and driveshaft differences too. I belive there may also be fuel system differences as well. I'm not sure exactly what you need, but if you SEARCH, there are already many, many threads on what you are trying to do, with lots of info.

If you want a V8 Explorer, fix the one you have, with the V6, sell it, and just go buy a V8Explorer.

If you're not looking to spend the $350 for the other trans, what about all of the other parts needed to swap in a V8- are you putting this V8 into a currently V6 truck? You'll need more than just the engine...
