Can an Explorer be started WITHOUT owners key ?

Not as far as I know... but I don't know a hole lot about the XCal2 and its capabilities. I don't believe it's a user-configurable function. Plus, the XCal deals with the PCM only, wheras the PATS module is integrated into the instrument panel. I would think that bypassing it would require an inordinate amount of programming... but again, I don't know for sure.

What about something like an x-cal2 can't it disable pats, so if you knew the computer code couldn't you upload a program with pats disabled and start it then?

Remember, to be able to even program with an Excal you have to have the key in the on position. The Xcal2 way would not work unless you already had access to the key once before. In which case why not just use the key instead. Not a viable option for thieves.

There is always a way to bypass something. It takes brains - or someone with brains to tell you how. Anyway is seems like bypassing the system would take $$ and brains - too much to take a 1 mile joyride and then torch it.

How about the machine they use to program keys? I had a locksmith make a key and he didn't need the original for anything but the cutting.
