I wouldn't see why not - since some explorers came stock with them. Worse come to worse you might have to get a different headliner

sawzaw lol

yeah you can. and if you want to tackle it yourself i got a spare one in the back yard.. complete minus the shade cover. all you have to do is center it where it goes on the roof, put down a bunch of masking tape ( so you don't damage the paint and for a place to draw on), mark the inside of the frame, take headliner down, cut out hole (and checking and rechecking your measurements), and then place frame in hole, put headliner in, trace on back of headliner, cut out headliner, and then place frame in hole with sealer and attach from bottom, reinstall headliner, and put glass on hinges. about a 3 hour job if you have the right tools.

Thats the only thing missing from my X that I wish it had.

A factory one will not be a real sunroof that is powered. 1st gens only had a sunroof that manual vented up, or could be taken out then you'd have to store it & pray it did't get broke.
For a real sunroof that retracts into the roof like the newer X's & 2nd gens you need to find a shop that installs those. There are conversion places.

I hate them myself cause I live where it's hot 90% of the year & can't enjoy them.

jason they are great at night..... they are actually refered to as a monnroof. i think that the term is rather stupid myself but it makes sense. night time is about the only time i would open mine anyway.... other than in the day when it is sitting to vent out out that sc heat. i can't stand an 130 degree explorer leather when i get into it. lol. driving down the road during the day with it open drives me crazy( wind noise ). would love to get a power one but dang they are expensive and if someone puts it in..... you are looking at some serious cash. i once saw one on trucks that was like a leather top thingy. it looked awsome and it did away with all the hiding of the glass and stuff. i wouldn't mind getting one of those.

I have 1 in my Acura(didn't have a choice) Even at night down here it's 80 & humid. I hate being hot, so it's all AC for me. I don't even open my windows most of the year.

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe the difference is Moon=tinted Sun=not.

windows down roof open is the only way to roll!

The one thing you need to keep in mind is there needs to be a place for the water to run off too from the roof chanel. In the first gens theres a tube down both the A and B pillars on each side of the vehicle to chanel off water.

Im not sure if youd neet to change the headliner eather. if you cut the hole carefully enough you prolly could use your existing one.

why can't you take an electric sunroof out of a 2nd gen and trace and cut and wire it up? is there that big of a difference in the shape/structure of the roof from 1st to 2nd gen?

Good question..
I cannot believe the price of sunroofs now.. $600 here in vancouver - manual one..
Anyone knows of a good place/price in Washington state to get one installed let me know.

Ebay has several 1st gen ones for sale.

You're asking for it..........with all the rain we get in the Pac NW.

Aloha, Mark

Maybe this should be a new thread but - Who here has installed their own?

actually there is no difference in a moonroof and a sunroof....originally they were called sunroofs then a few decades ago either GMC or Ford started calling them moonroofs. Now people have all sorts of ideas about what the differences are, but in actuality; there is none.
