96 was the last year you could have true 2wd. There was actually a system in front axle to disconnect it. In your case you can look up "brown wire mod." This wire controls 4wd clutch lockup.
An alternative would be downloading a software called forscan and using an OBDII adapter. There you can go into the GEM and force a percentage to your 4wd clutch. It works on my 96(no 4x4 hi, just auto), but you would need to keep a laptop in your car. If I had a 97+ I would consider making an app for it.
