Can I put a 2002 or newer 4.0 in my 2000 XLT?

I have search but if I am looking in the wrong spot just let me know. I have a 4.0 SOHC XLT and I wanted to know if I can put the same engine from a 2002 or newer into my 2000 links would help me out a lot.

yes I did several searches couldn't find what I was looking for like a yes, and this is what you need to change.

I think you will be able too. Just so as long as you keep all the original sensors, valvecovers, intake manifold etc.

Yes, but make sure you keep with the wire throttle. 2004 and after use a drive by wire system, its a computered controlled throttle body. Anything before 2003 will work the best.

I guess I really just planed on using the long block and was concerned about the transmission, exhaust and intake bolting to it.

Most 4.0L's should be about the same. A transmission swap may be needed. Exhaust should be fine.

A number of members have used newer Mustang engines...

I can think of 3 folks that have successfully installed a 2005-newer 4.0 from a Mustang into their Explorers... The engines are the same long block wise, cams and all...They did reuse the intake and wiring harnesses as I recall...

It is not difficult; a simple r&r and reassembly...And a great way to update the chain tensioners and all associated hardware plus get a lower mileage engine in the process...
