Can i use 99 SOHC heads on a 98 OHC 4 L?

why dont you start by telling us what the problem is? Did the 98 OHV engine get overheated? crack a head?
in theory any year OHV head will bolt on, 91-01 or whatever year they stopped making it. BUT the 91-92 heads are weak, the 93-94 heads are a bit better, and the 95+ have a different compression ratio. So idealy you want 95+ heads yes.

i got the motor with a ranger i bought. The previous owner had no idea the condition of the engine and only knew it was a 4 litre out of a 98. I have taken it all apart and noticed the head gasket was blown and one of the heads had a tiny crack in it. Other than that the engine looks good.
You mention the earlier heads were weak, if i put them on a 98 would that just mean lower compression? If so, would it even be worth it to put them on if they were in good condition?
I have found some heads off a 96 aerostar but i havent ripped them off to see the condition. Hopefully if those look good i will get those.

The 91-92 heads are a weak casting
The 93's are slightly better
the 95's and up are stronger, meaning do not crack as easy.
I believe it works the other way around as far as compression goes, meaning the 95+ heads on a 94 or earlier block will get you more compression, but I could have it backwards so I would research.
Those 96 Aerostar heads should be identical to your 98 engine, all 95+ are the the same if I remember correctly
