Long time reader, first post. 07 explorer 4.0 L engine 186,000 miles. Fuel mileage began decreasing and started smelling like catalytic converter was getting clogged. Ran some seafoam every other fill up and mileage would improve and smell would go away. Recently, ran out of gas on multiple occasions and check engine light came on with codes for MAF sensor. Found exposed wires to sensor, repaired and cleaned sensor. Problems persisted. Getting running idle, car tries to lurch forward when at a stop light. Removed PCM last weekend and tried to remove over to no avail. Looks like someone removed it previously and used some type of silicone caulking or something to secure it back on. For the past week been having problems getting it out of park. Have had to push the button 3-4 times before shift lever will move. 3 days ago car shifted unbelievably rough and lurched forward, made a high pitch sound and now won't go into gear. When I try to start it I hear the sound for a second. Could all of these issues be related to the PCM? My car was running great before this.

When you say problemsmpersisted, did the mas codes go away after you fixed exposed wires?

No the codes changed but were still for the MAF per O'Reilly.

So if you still have codes you should try to solve them first

Now with that said I have seen pcm go bad
Usually in the old 91-94 trucks because we’ll they are old now
Sometimes a pcm will cause all sorts of issues and throw many obviously false codes

In your case I would continue to try and fix the codes see if the pcm is actually just doing it’s job

Forget what the Oreillys parts jockey says, write down the actual code numbers and do some Google searching yourself, way better then just taking their word fornit
