1. Can someone please explain to me how the engine works on the SOHC VS the OHV. Where does it get all the extra power??

2. And I looked under my friends 98 4.0 4x4 ranger today and the engine setup is the same as the 95 engine except that his engine puts out 207 in HP why???

I think part of it is because with the camshaft on top of the engin, it doesn't require lifters to open the valves. Without having to push the lifters up and down the engine has less work to do resulting in more horsepower. It also allows it to rev higher. For instance my '94 4.0L Ranger red-lined at 5200 RPM. My '97 SOHC 4.0L Explorer red-lined at 6000 RPM before I put in my SuperChip.

Bye the way, your friends '98 Ranger puts out only 160 HP. Ford didn't put the 207 HP SOHC into the Ranger until 2001. He has the same horsepower you do. The SOHC has been available in the Explorer since '97 though.

So can I tell him his 98 ranger only puts out 160HP and 220 Torque

Yes, but it should be 225 ft/lbs of torque. That is what my '94 Ranger was rated at, as well as the '97 4.0L when used in the Explorer.
