Ford Explorer XLT 2008
Hello Explorer friends

I have an Explorer 2008 XLT. It has less than 60000mi. I love my SUV and I don't want to sell it, instead it has 8 years.

Unfortunately, I had the SUV parked in front my garage because the engine doesn't want to start. When I try to start the SUV, once I turn the key, the whole panel works apparently correct but the engine does not start. There is not any little noise from the motor.
The battery is OK, lights and horn, works well. But I do not understand why starting does not respond.

A mechanic told me that it is a problem of the Panel, and that it has to be changed because the computer is not recognizing it and has to be change.

Does someone can help me what to do... I will appreciate it.

Thanks , Antonio

Hello Rick,

I have three keys. Two originals and one additional I bought in Amazon a year ago. None of the three work. I tried to start the SUV with all three but the behavior was the same. The panel just turn on, all signals begin to appear but the contact does not start the engine.
A couple of weeks ago, my daughter started the SUV playing with the keys, but without any logic. I was not with her, so I don't know what she did. After that she tried to replicate but it didn't work.

Do you think I can follow the setting process with the two original keys, instead the keys have not worked again?....

On the other hand, do you see logical what said the mechanic? need o replace the Panel to make the computer work again?

Thanks a lot for your help, Antonio

It sounds like PATS got triggered. It's the Passive Anti Theft System. There is info about the system here:

Bite the bullet and flat bed it to the dealership. PATS isnt something you can fix with unhooking the battery or cycling the ignition 10 times.

Thank you Floordford ... The machanic talked about changing the whole panel, which sounds a little weird to me... do you think it is possible???

If you get a different gauge cluster you will be in the same boat. The gauges, key and computer all have to sync up to work. If 1 is not recognized then you wont start.

Thank you Floorford for your tip... given than there are three components:Gauges, Key and computer ...is there is a way the technician may detect what is the source of the problem?

Ford dealerships have a diagnostic analysis computer that will be able to do it all. Find the issue and then sync them all up. Im guessing most dealerships could have you in and out in 2hr or less.
