Can this gas tank trick be applied to Explorers?

I've heard about this before, and I know TJ guys have cut their filler necks to get more capacity, anybody know of anyway to modify the existing gas tank for more volume. Stupid short wheelbase on my Sport, 17 gallons is worthless on the highway in an SUV.

Would make sense do the 10" difference in length, I was just hoping a filler neck trick or something to that effect could be done to maybe gain even a gallon or 2.

short of puttin in an extra tank or cell, we are pretty much ske-rewed.

See I kinda like mine all tucked an underneath.. well, sorta, you see alot of it b/c of the body lift. But it ain't going on top thats for sure

Tires on the roof = PITA and higher center of gravity.

If you are serious about adding more gas you are going to need a new tank or additional tank, the best location is where your spare is. So where does the spare go? where the back seat was!

Rangers had dual tanks, a little one in the back under the bed.

the BII tank intop an Explorer is not an easy thing to do, it can be done and will fit but it requires mod's to a frame crossmember and possibly a body lift or mods to the cargo area floor.
PLus the spare is in the way again

there may be aftermarket tanks that are larger and mount in the stock location?

Me and my BII friends were discussing adding a BII tank to an Ex at one time. We even measured things out.
The catch is that, if you don't cut the crossmember, you can fit the tank, but it would hang low, and that could hurt your departure angle.

On the other hand, if you are willing to cut that Explorer frame crossmember and also remove the spare tire mounting apparatus, the tank would tuck up in there enough to where it wouldn't be a clearance problem. But it would have to be *right* up next to the body, and I don't like that idea. Now, if you have a little body lift that would help a lot. Didn't some AUSTRALIAN explorers come with a rear aux gas tank?

This mod would give about 40 gallons of gas to a 1st gen, and that would give a range of, say, about 700 to 750 miles, or 11-12 hours driving. That's a lot of driving! I only do that when I go from Missouri to Denver, so I haven't ever done this mod.

Hmm well I was just looking at the 77EB frame I have for my axle swap and wondered if the rear gas tank would fit where the old spare tire was in my EX. It looks like it would be a perfect fit.

Well this is the best pic I have. The tank is between the frame and behind my son. Its not that big either.

With you're body lift, if you have a hitch, you spare is stuck under there, you'll have to cut the chain, so you won't be able to put it back under there again. Lret me know if you get the tank to work.
