Can we say: WHAT THE HELL?

Its kinda odd looking, I suppose. Looks like an Aztek? I wouldnt go that far at all. As for it looking like a Lexus...I dont think so either, maybe a little like a more angular RX300. It'll sell like toilet paper on Survivor.

Pictures Do Not Do Justice...

For any of those who have seen it in person, it looks much better.

hey guys.. don't get all carried away about the current mountaineer.. AKA the explorer CLONE.. its the same vehicle.. with a few less options than the limited, and about 8k $ less.. plus ya gotta admit that grille is pretty tight ;) I did not like the 2002 when I first saw it.. 2nd.. 3rd.. even 50th time.. but I think like the dodge ram that came out in the early 90s.. these new "fugly" car models will grow on us.. its not like we have a choice.. whether we like it our not.. the auto makers are going to flood the roads with these horrible looking things like the aztec, PT crapper, and now this poor mutilated mountaineer.. we have to see them.. who designs these things anyway??

Like earlier mentioned, I like the new look of the Mountaineer.

ok i saw the new explorer too and i have got to say that they are really growing on me. i like them now. linda sportzy kinda truckzy

I agree.. For example, the 99 Mustang body style: the new edgy, retro look. Hated it at first, but now I absolutely love it. It'll grow on us as these new... futuristic? ... styles start to pop up more and more in the auto market.

But other than that, I still don't like the looks yet of the new styles (cars [pt cruiser, which got MotorTrend's car of the year. WTF???], SUVs [aztek, mountaineer]).

I etioned this once before in another thread about the new Mountaineer but I'll say it again. I think all these new "cutting edge" car designs (ie. Aztec, Mountaineer, etc..) are just a test by the designers to see just how ugly they can make a vehicle and still sell millions. The Aztec (A$$tack) flopped and they still think that they can sell more. What's next?

I agree.. you could not pay me the price of an azteck to drive one.. can you beleive this FWD exucse for a station wagon sells ofr $21k?? I saw it in a magazine last night.. theres its flop factor right there.. that and the fact that its 90% plastic and 10% paint. I told my friends a few days ago.. in the future our vehicles are gonna be that ugly grey plastic all over, and the only different is going to be the color of our mirrors.. auto makers.. like fashion makers, have no clue what they are doin IMO

ok i think the new mountainer and sploder look ok but the aztec is friggin ugly

Im not sure I am even real excited that the New Mercurys are being made in my home town. Can you say ugly???...

Nice to know I'm not the only one that wants to run over another ugly vehicle. My brother wanted an old VW Beetle, I told him if he got one he would find tire tracks on top of it that matched my tires or he would see my truck on its side next to his beetle because I tried to run it over and didn't quite make it :)

Anyway back to the topic. I agree new cars are getting uglier! We need to get the computer nerds out of the design studios and get some poeple with some real artistic ability in there designing the cars, something with some lines, not these goofy looking things with lines going in every which direction. Same thing goes for people planning these things. I read a couple things in the March issue of C&D that really made me mad. They were talking about the new Chevy Trailblazer/GMC Envoy and how being all new GM should have used IRS in the rear instead of the traditional solid axle we all know and love. GM said they picked the solid axle because it offered better off road capability. C&D's response was...but independent rear suspension offers better on road ride and handling! I think C&D missed the boat. In the same issue they tested the Australian Ford Falcon, kind of a modern day El Camino. Anyway they were talking about its low center of gravity and handling and they said " Note to truck owners: This is what comes from a lower center of gravity." Sorry guys if I'm buying a truck I'm not looking to go zipping around corners like I'm in a Vette or a mustang. I'm buying it to tow and haul and take me way way off the paved road, something these sissy, prissy new utes can't even dream of! Sorry to rant I just neede to blow off some steam. C&D in another issue they tested the 2002 Explorer and praised its IRS. In the article one of the editors said he thoguht car manufacturers should look to their excellent minivan platforms for future sport utes. They offer better ride and handling and much better road manners. In my opinion this is CRAP! These magazine people only look at it from the speed and handling aspect, they want everything to drive like a BMW without giving a single thought to the purpose of the vehicles and to who might use them let alone poeple who depend on their tough truchs for a living. They can't afford to have any of these new sissy sport utes. Once again the issue of new car designs has got me going, I'm very opinionated on this and am very unhappy at the direction trucks have taken. I just hope those guys that advertise all the Red vehicles don't go and mees up their new truck coming out in a year or so.

Ok I'll try and stop now. Back to the thread topic, in my opinion the new Mountaineer is every bit as ugly as the new Explorer, even more so, it DOES border up there with the Aztec(I can't believe those ugly things paced Daytona! OK I'll stop). OK theres my long winded opinion. I hope Detroit is listening!

I Agree

Took me awhile to type this after almost hurling from looking at the darn thing. Would have mussed my keyboard if I did.

I Agree with Tar on the C&D guys. What good is an SUV if you cant do SUV things with it? If you want a car ride BUY A FRIGGIN CAR!!!!! Cars are too soft a ride to be taken off road, which is what is happening with all these SUVwannabees. I'll even put my V8 AWD up against them and see who wins in offroading!

BTW I would just LOVE to see some of these expensive SUVwannabees like the mercedes and lexus just TRY to pull my trailer without ripping itself apart, No Frame, No Game!!!!
