'99 V6 Mountaineer
I'm going to check out this mountaineer later today, the seller didn't list much info other than what they've replaced.

Due to time constraints I can't finish the work to be done on my 91, so I'm looking into a later model Ex. This looks like a gen2 but not sure what year?

its definatly 2nd gen.. its hard to tell with all the more pics but I would say 97 ish

98-01 but that's all I got. When you go look at it look on the door jam and it'll give you month and year.

Hmm, 98-01 for sure

If I could see the tail gate. 98 says "Mountaineer Mercury"

They have it the other way around--starting late 99 I think.

Of the build date yes. Our 98 had a 11-97 build date though.

Thanks guys. Aside from the engine and tranny, I've pretty much torn off every piece of my 91 explorer and put it back on, so I have a decent idea of what to look for, even in a 2nd gen. All the ad says is
Recently Passed Smog
New Tires
New Breaks
New Battery
New Interior
Custom Sound
Newly installed Speakers
She's asking 3k.

How many miles? That's not bad, assuming everything works.

What does "New Interior" mean? That might worry me a little...

Pulp fiction new?

Pulp fiction new?

Sounds like a carfax commercial - "07 Mountaineer, was the scene of a bloody murder....NEW INTERIOR! haha

I'd get a blacklight... Check the ceiling too... lol!

I agree with Joe, it's mostly about the mileage, at 150k, alot of sh*t goes south...for example, for a truck over 120k, I'd say 3k is high...$2400 is more like it

I was going to ask that, what's the common failure points on that generation after you get into the higher mileage? My 91 has like 340k miles on and still runs great, but I fixed a ton of stuff on that rig.

After 150k, I changed: Head Gasket, L.I Gasket, Injector O-rings, Water Pump, Thermostat, Ball Joints/Control Arms (both sides), Rack and Pinion, Alternator, o2 sensors, Cylinder Heads (after HG failure), AC Evap Core Accumulator/Drier, Shocks, Sway bars, Stabilizer bar bushings, IAC valve, Fuel Pressure regulator, Fuel Pump...need to get to the lifters and rocker arms and pushrods (I have the ticking), but thats for the fall...

Thanks for the info, bummer about the heads and gaskets. I'll be sure to check all that stuff and see if they've been replaced. The head gaskets is the only thing that scares me, cause I just moved to a place that doesn't let you work on cars. Everything else I can have done at a shop without breaking the bank too bad.

If it drives OK and there's no obvious problems, I was going to offer $2700 so I could have a little extra to throw at a stereo or CB radio or something, but if the miles are high I'll probably go $2400.

I got my '96 XLT with about 130k for 1700...clearly there was work that needed to be done though...

oh and next week is the noisy tensioner pully and while I'm there, the idler pully. After that I need a break! LOL

Yeah that's the thing, I'm so crunched for time between work and family obligations, I figured my best bet was going to be taking the cash I was going to use to fix my 91 and sink it into a rig that didn't need as much work. Sucks because the only things left to fix were the window regulators, AC, carpet, headliner, and get a new stereo. I spent the previous 2 years fixing just about everything else on that rig, lol.

If it has the 5.0 you will have no head gasket or transmission issues. My 97 Mountaineer had 250k and was still going strong.
