Can't attach exhaust pipe flange due to oil filter bracket

I recently replaced my cylinder heads on my '92. In doing so I had to disconnect the exhaust manifolds. When i tried to reconnect the right manifold, the flange slid down and I can't get it back up becuase the oil filter bracket is now practically touching the exhaust pipe that I have to slide it up. I put everything back on the engine and this is the only thing that I cannot get back together. I was thinking of disconnecting the pipe from the catalytic converter so I can move it around but this will be a pain because the bolts are rusted over. I can post a picture of the oil filter bracket to exhaust pipe if it would help.

Does removing the flange on the driver's side to allow flex in the down-pipe give you enough clearance? If not you may have to remove those rusted bolts or see how difficult it is to remove the filter adapter. When I did this job I attached the manifolds before placeing the heads. You can cut-out some of the fender liner to allow access through the wheel well.

I assume the Y pipe is not attached on the D side yet if it isstuck behind the oil filter adapter.........but if it is you gotta remove it, you must tighten both pass and d side at the same time or it will leak....

Don't use the exhaust manifold gaskets that came in your kit but replace metal to metal the way it came from the factory. My gaskets burned out in a few thousand miles and they are not to be used. Remember to use anti-seeze lubricant on the bolts because they are notorious for seezing and breaking off since they are such small diameter.

thanks for the help, i was able to get the flange past the oil filter bracket by loosing the drivers side and I reattached together.

Ah yes the Y pipe you must tighten both sides at the same time or you will get leaks

So start the trheads on one side, then move to the other, then torque each bolt a bit at a time, until all is tight. This is key to getting the ball type flanges to seal up.
