Just bought the truck and wanted to replace the seal on the tranmission pan.

I removed the pan just fine. Looked at my new filter and noticed the rubber threads on the top side to screw into the tranmission to hold the filter in place. Problem is, the threads from the original filter did not come out. The rest of the filter came out but the threads remained in.

So I worked at it for a while with a set of tweasers. I'm able to get most of the old threads out but not perfect.

I am able to "screw" in the new filter although I'm concerned it will fall down after a few bumps in the road.

Can someone tell me how secure/tight the transmission filter should be? Is there a better way to install it? I can pull it off with a decent tug. I can only really turn it 90 deg. while screwing it in because of space. Is this normal?

so I was able to get the new filter on there pretty good but I still dont think it's very tight. I can pull it off with some force, more than a little but not a ton of force.

Does the pan support the filter at all? When I put the pan back on will it brace the filter at all?

Any comments out there? Thanks for the assistance.

c'mon, I know you all have replaced the transmission filter. Can you please comment on how "tight" it was secured?

Any thoughts out there?

Thanks much.

There is no bolt. there was not a bolt on the original filter either.

97 mountn...

There's just the rubber threads on the top side of the filter that are suppose to screw into the case.

Can anyone comment on the above posts? I'm sure plenty have changed their filter before and could have a comment or two.

thanks again.

Just went out and looked again and confirmed there is no bolt. The filter is secured by screwing the rubber threads on the top side of the filter into the case.

It just isnt very strudy.

Couple of thoughts:

- is there anything I put around the treads to make the fit a bit more sung?

- wouldnt the fluid inside the pan help support the filter?

Is this the same filter? http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/4R44E_4R55E_5R55E_transmission_filter_p/230-000023924.htm

No, I'll take a picture and post it.

thanks for the response.

sorry, I have a 97 V8 AWD Mountaineer.

No reason to panic?

This is a picture of my old filter without the orange rubber threads on it. We are looking at the top side that connects to the body.

My new filter is the same and has been installed overnight. I left the pan off overnight just to make sure it held up while. I think it did although I dont want to have another fluid bath if I can avoid doing anything wrong before putting the pan back on...

Thank so much, I really appreciate it!

I believe that's the same filter. Here's a top view.

Thanks again. cant thank you enough.

The sleeves were identical and are the filters (bought from the dealer). I think I'm overreacting and was looking for some other opinions, which you provided wonderfully.

It's in there pretty good, I'm just surprised there's not a bolt.

Have a good Sunday.

HORAH HORAH!!! I figured it out!

My problem was I didnt pull the original grommet out entirely. There was still half in there, creating a shelf that wouldnt allow the entire new grommet to go all the way up!

I found this thread that was very helpful. Somewhat similar to my case.

I still had half of the old grommet in there!

Thanks so much all!
