'03 Ford Explorer XLS 4X4
I'm having tranny problems, but none like what I read about online. My O/D light isn't flashing, nor the 4x4 light; it shifts up flawlessly, going fast or slow, all 4x4 works and it downshifts very quickly and smoothly when going up-hill...

BUT

about 30% percent of the time when rolling to a stop, once it gets right below 20mph it sometimes SLAMS into gear. Downshifting. This is the ONLY time the tranny "seems" not normal. Well that and the infamous clunking into reverse occasionally and the "lag" between drive and reverse.

Should I start at a flush and go from there? Or should that be avoided? (ive heard it can do more harm than good)

I usually do all work myself, but where i just moved is a home owners association so I can't even as much as pop my hood without people giving me dirty looks.

2003 explorer auto xls 4x4 4.0. 97k miles.

Thanks in advance!!

i had the same 100% problem and i changed the solenoid pak and it went away... around $375 from ford

That's the same issue I have with my 2002 mounty prior to O/D flashing. My wife has been driving the truck for years with that kind of issue. Luckily it was under warranty when the O/D started flashing and the dealer replaced it. The servos wore down and they tend to last only 60-70k miles (there are some cases that it might be less) Mine was close to 80k. I hope the replacement will last longer than that.

I have started having a similar issue in the past 5-7k miles. Operates fine but when I decelerate to a stop and I get below 20 mph it "thunks." It also shift hard into D and R kind of hard when it is warmed up. Just bought a solenoid block and I am going to swap it out this weekend and put some fresh trans fluid in, hopefully that will fix it.

Can you link me to the parts or part number?

It shouldn't be too late for my tranny, right? Since no lights are flashing or anything, right?
