I happened to stumble across this once and I can't find it anymore.

I saw or heard of someone who had or sold a capless fuel cap modification that could be used on explorers, kind of like the Ford Flex.

Has anyone else seen this anywhere?

Sweet, I bet that also helps with those sh!tty pumps that like to puke fuel before they shutoff.

Is it really that much of a hassle to take the gas cap off?

I've seen and used gas caps that you dont have to take off (trap door style) didn't really seem like it was THAT much more convenient?

No its not hard. I just like the idea on possible fuel saving capabilities, such as for the Ford Flex, which seals and prevents gas vapors from escaping, apparently better than normal caps.

And because I'm going more for showcar, than workhorse, I'm tired of careless gas attendants just throwing the cap down, dangling and scrathing the paint:mad:. I'm a very meticulous person when it comes to things I put alot of time into keeping in good condition. If I could, I would fill my gas tank myself, but it's illegal in NJ.:D

Thanks for the website. I think that's the one I saw. I check into it more.

Only in Jersey

Yeah, full service station is all over NJ, so those attendants that are careless does not apply here in NV, unless you want to pay extra and very rare... but I like the idea.

And here I thought that the days of full service went the way of the Dodo. Full service in Jersey eh? Maybe it's not as bad as I've heard. I'd pay more for the old full service. Roll down my window a crack. Hand out a $50 and say fill-er-up. (Used to be a $10). Sign me up. I want it.

NO YOU DON'T.

It is illegal to pump your gas in New Jersey, and Oregon. As in you will get a HEALTH Violation Code Fine/Ticket for pumping your own gas in those states.

If it is an OPTION, like it used to be growing up...sure. I'd take advantage once in a while. But to LEGALLY MANDATE that I not pump my own gas on the premis that it is SO dangerous, and unsafe for the general public to perform such a task is a bunch of BS, that the gas stations MUST employ people to do that job. The individuals must get a certificate from the state that says they can perform the task of filling a fuel tank properly.

It is just another ploy from the government to use the EPA against us. Don't get me wrong. I tend to lean to the left on MOST topics. But this one hits a SERIOUS nerve with me.

Don't tell me that it is a Public and Environmental Safety Hazard for me to put $20.00 worth of gas into my own vehicle. If it were SUCH a dangerous task, shouldn't they have some type of protective gear on when pumping my gas? Do they? NO. They walk up to your car, take your card/cash and pump gas into your vehicle EXACTLY HOW YOU WOULD DO IT. No gloves. No Face Shield. No Respirator. No gas spillage catching device to protect the concrete or blacktop from gasoline and diesel run-off that IS going to end up in the sewer system and/or vegitation around the gas station.

It is just RIDICULOUS that you have to PAY MORE for gasoline in Oregon and New Jersey to pay for a service that is NOT REQUIRED. Those laws were made up to create jobs in areas that were experiencing large percentages of un-employment. So they use scare tactics to pass legislation to employ those not smart enough to get a REAL job in the area. A lot of those employed in that line of work can't pass a backround check or drug test that would be required in just about every other sector.

So, who is a more reliable gas pump jockey...the guy that has his certificate from the Great State of Oregon/New Jersey that says they can safely pump gas into a vehicle....OR the guy that writes the check for $500 for his car payment every month? I'm betting the guy in the $35,000 Mustang has a little more invested into the vehicle, and will take greater care when pumping gas to NOT SPILL IT ON THE PAINT.

(okay, RANT mode: OFF)

thats why i love living in MN. i GET to pump my own gas. i do agree thtat it is total bs that you have to pay more for gas just cause the government says that someone else must pump your gas for you.

That is the most ridiculous thing ive ever seen. If I lived there, id bring a few red gas cans for like lawnmowers, then get to my house and fill my own gas tank with them.

Please dont tell me you have to bring your lawnmower to them too...

Wow that is ridiculous. Down here in Texas we do our own gas fillup. I have seen people do stupid things to like trying to drive the car with the pump handle still attached (lifted the rear wheels right off the ground), but still I think I can pump my own gas, thank you.

wow, I never knew that in NJ. hahaha... I even leave my ex running half the time while im gassing her up! I never really understood why gassing up with the engine off is significantly safer.

I suppose that the ignition system could ignite vapor fumes?? but come on.

In answer to many comments.

I do agree that it is BS that we can't fill our tanks because of laws that they don't enforce when in relation to the gas attendants themselves.

I believe it was said that the gas is more expensive as a form of payment to the attendants, which it is and it would cost less for us to do it ourselves, but NJ gas prices are one of the lowest in the country because of low gasoline taxes.

So we still pay less than most and can sit back and relax. I know I'm going against my want to fill 'er up myself, but it is nice occasionally.:)

The only way id ever be able to sit back and relax while my gas was getting pumped by someone else, is knowing that the carless bum doing it actually did it with some caution and respect, not dropping the cap and letting it bobble and roll back and fourth on the paint, and not shaking the pump a bit, so no gas goes on my truck, and tops it off like I do, cus when the pump automatically stops, my tanks not full, the gas goes back down, as the air escapes, so I usually get at least another 1.5 gallons in there after it stops.

Those things BLOW. I just got one a few days ago and it's a piece of crap. Just yesterday I had I tried to use a gas nozzle at a station in Wisconsin and it didn't even fit. I had a tough time with another station too. Gas leaked all over the place and it knocked the little flap off that "seals" the system. I'm going to review it in the "reviews" section soon. A definite 1/10. I'll give it a 0/10 if I could.

What a waste of $15. I'd take it back, but I've left the Milwaukee area where I got it and they don't have an Advance Auto Parts where I live. I plan to contact Stant about this piece of junk. :thumbdwn:

I've gone back to my old cap.

Exactly. The only time I let someone else pump it is if it's raining really bad, and it's an "open" station, with no roof over the pumps. That, and very rarely if I'm sick and don't feel like getting out.

Yes, I live in NJ. YES, I pump my own gas. I've had a couple of "issues" at a few stations, but I've made it VERY clear to them that they can take the "No Self-Serve" and stick it where the sun doesn't shine. Unless they are willing to physically stop me from pumping it, I will. Of course there are some stations where the pumps are setup so that you need an attendant card to start it. No problem, just swipe your card and go help someone else.

I've always told them that if they don't let me pump it myself, then they won't get my money. One Quick Chek station that I used to frequent pulled this. Actually it was jut one militant employee. EVERY time this guy saw me pull in he would RUN to get between me and the pump. One day, we finally got into a screaming match over it. His boss took his side. I've never bought another drop of gas from them since. It's probably cost them $10,000 in lost sales. ( I was still racing at the time. Between the truck and race car, I would spend cose to $125 a weekend on gas, just for this, not to mention my other vehicles) Of course, I've told everyone who would listen, not to go there.
A different Quick Chek, near me, that I now use regularly, also tried this once or twice. Again, actually just one or two employees. They claimed that the fire marshall had just been there, and warned them about self-serve. I told them I was sorry I had missed him, because I would have told him what I thought,etc..... Don't know what happened, maybe the heat is off them or something, but now they don't bother me, so I go there.

Bottom line, if you don't like this "No Self-Serve" thing, ignore it. I see many other people do. Yes, some places will give you a hard time. So, let them know that they will lose the priviledge of your business if they do it again.
Maybe, this way, we can get enough support to get the law changed.

I agree with Brian about that cap dangling and what not, but my attendant doesn't stop at the first click, he'll normally try to make it an even dollar amount packing her full of fuel.

I have currently only been going to a Shell station around the corner that is American owned and operated :us: and I feel the guy is not always careless. Most of the gas cap scatches have been caused by the places my mom went when she owned the truck, but now in my possession, I take very good care of it- getting good fuel and keeping up with the maintenance.

Oh, and thanks Celly for giving your own product review on the capless stant thing. It helped me from making a bad decision and wasting my money, sorry you wasted yours.

I don't like how ford put the cap on a string. The grand cherokee has a holder on the tank door to set the cap securely on. I always thought that was a much better system.
