car dies when put into gear

If anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated my 1994 explorer was running fine in idle then when i try to put it in gear being reverse or drive first or second it dies but it does run fine in park or neutral

I've heard of cases where the torque converter lockup clutch (TCC) gets stuck locked, causing the engine to stall when put in gear (much the same as dumping the clutch on a manual transmission). If this seems like what yours is doing, it seems that cleaning the valve body is often enough to get it working right again.
