Aight, well this is for my buddies Jeep YJ, but I'm sure the concept is the same. I can't find it in the manuals... But the front axle shafts are removed and the bearing caps are also removed. How does the center section pull out? It looks like it just yanks out, but I don't wanna damage anything until I know. I'm assuming it's similar to removing the center section on an 8.8 I need to get it out, so I can replace the inner axle seals... Let me know what y'all know bout either a d30 front end or 8.8 carrier removal

Thanks
Pete

Hey Pete, i got your PM.

That carrier is almost like it's pressed in, but it's just where the caps are so tight. You really just have to get under the bearings or somewhere where you can pry on it. That's how i had to get mine out. I couldn't just pull it out, trust me i yanked on it! But that's how it comes out.

I've never had the carrier out of my 8.8 so i'm sure if it's the same. Be sure and ask if i can help any more.

I would make sure you place a mark of some type so it goes back in the same position as it came out. That way you won't have to mess with the back lash setting, and if there are any shims, make sure to note where they came out , and put them back!

Had the same problem taking apart a friends D44. We ended up using a racheting strap around the carrier out to the bumper, pulling tight, and one whack with a mallet sent the carrier flying into our laps :)

Excellent... I'm just waking up and about to head out and continue the project...

Also Josh, how tough was it for you to get the seals removed and installed... they don't look easy, but don't seem overwhelmingly hard...

Infact here's a site I'm also using to reference the rebuild.

Thanks for the info, and any to come!

Oh and if it's so hard to get out, how hard is it to get that carrier back in?

Pete

It should go most of the way in without a problem . . . then just throw on the bearing caps and tighten down.

I didn't do any of the seals or bearing, just left them be. So, i can't help you there!

so then what is the deal with the u-joints? I got the c-clips off and can't get anywhere... and what's the deal with these overly big outer caps? Anyone?
