I have read all about these cat-back systems and it seems to me they only allow free flowing of the exhaust system. I have always just replaced any stock muffler with a cherry bomb (about $14-17) and it improves flow, sound, etc.

Any idea why no one just does this on explorers ... when I sold the Bronco (finally) two weeks ago the guywho bought it was thrilled that it had the cherry bomb (after the cat conv.) installed????

I am also asking b/c this and the k&n filtercharger are probably coming soon and I wish to know any potential drawbacks.

There are a few reasons I can think of to go cat-back vs. cherry bomb. IMHO...cherry bombs are TOO LOUD!!! Also, most go w/stainless-steel cat-backs, therefore it'll never rust and never have to be replaced(unless a nasty rock gets ya!). I also would have to say the gains from a cat-back would be greater than those from a cherry bomb because you are replace most of the piping w/larger diameters. And adding a cat-back also gets you ready for headers if you ever want 'em!

And in my opinion, a cherry bomb muffler would look ridiculous under and explorer.

I am sorry, I did not realize the LOOK of you exhaust was important. That has never crossed my mind when buying performance products.

Wells,
My '91 had a muffler and a resonator in the stock configuration. The whole system was pretty beat up and deterioriated. When I considered the cost of a shop replacing the stock muffler, resonator, and piping, it was comparable to what I paid for my Borla Cat-back. This system provided larger pipe diameter and a performance muffler, all in 100% stainless steel.
For my liking, the Borla tone is poweflul and throaty when I step on it, but not like a glass pack "cherry bomb" which I just don't care for.

exhaust

i cut out my muffler and fabricated duel exhaust with 99 cobra tail pipes i like the sound of it alot. but if you dont like your truck loud don't cut out you'r muffler

Muffs

Mcoil and all:

Cutting your muffler, and Cherry bombs are guaranteed excessive noise tickets in CA, plus they wouldn't pass our Smog inspections. Just spend a $100 bucks or so, buy a Dynomax Superturbo (Lowest back pressure of the street legals, but a good low sound) and have a 2 1'2 " custom pipe bent by your local shop, providing they can do smooth mandrell bends, and they can tuck it up real tight so you don't rip it of on any trail worth the trouble of running. ( this assumes you have a V6). A reputable shop will tell you if you should go bigger for a V8. Oh yeah, and you won't be totally obnoxious and unwelcome out in the wilderness!!

cherry bomb?

It's classic power vs. price. I have a good background in
drag racing and I've gotta tell you, those glasspacks suck
horsepower. A good muffler such as a flowmaster or borla
would be far superior. I don't care about noise it's
music to my ears, but 'bombs will cost you power. I
would recommend a good cat-back system or muffler.

i have the cherry bomb turbo muffler on my 97 EB 5.0 and it sounds great. i nice low rumble at idle and then when i floor it and gives me (and the opposition lol) the scream that i am always tring to look for in others such as magnaflow and flowmaster. decent price for a decent sound i think :D
