Very common for cats on any vehicle to clog up and when they do the heat that is captured inside them will make them very hot. And when your exhaust has no way out it will run rough.
Replacing cats with 80,000+ miles is not uncommon.

Leaking fuel injector or an overly rich fuel mixture will do it everytime!

One bad spark plug wire will cause this. Been there, saw that.

you could also have just had one small piece of debris get caught in there. the honey comb is fairly small. using no name fuels can cause this. if this is the case choke up the extra nickel to avoid BJs gas ;)

If you're into mods for your Explorer this is a good time to get a hi-flow cat and cat back exhaust.
