you will not pass inspection w/out cats (illegal in most places), and you will also have a CEL on.

umm, what engine do you have? that will help you get a answer on how many cats..... OR you can crawl under there and take a look ;)

CEL on? i crawled under it and saw 4. 2 front with O2 sensors before and after and 2 rear with no O2 sensors. I had the check engine light ran for codes and all it said was cat was bad. I have the 5.0

Used cat from auto-wreckers should do the job...

CEL = Check Engine Light.

you can run O2 sims for your down stream o2 sensors (after the cats) and pass emmission

I think that it is illegal for them to sell you a used cat. I was told it was a $10,000 fine for the wrecking yard to sell it to you, and they make about $60 for each one they recover for scrap.

You will fail Misery's safety inspection. I wanted to remove the third cat on my '97 Cougar. I called the place I have my inspections done and they said it would fail.

It's damn stupid as the cat has nothing to do with safety. How I miss living in Kansas. No BS inspections.

Why would that be? Makes no sense; you want to bring your vehicle back into emissions compliance and they say its illegal?

its because they would basically be selling u hazardous material, old cats have all kinds of heavy metals in them as well as other nasty stuff. if u have emissions tests then new cats is the answer. if they just look under then u can have them "drilled out" and then use the part they sell for the mustangs to fix the cel problem.

Never heard that before, I can buy used cats here for next to nothing. I would think that "drilling them out" would release a lot of hazardous material as well. Is that legal?

Noooo, it is not legal to drill them out. Best advice is if you do that don't get caught.
There are states that actually use a "sniffer" to test the exhaust gases. Massachusetts is one of them. Getting caught with drilled out cats is a hefty fine.

how about i just replace the front 2 cats and punch out the rear. I have a place thatll pass it for a safety inspection so thats not a big issue

Do you know why your cats went bad in the first place?
Are they plugged? If so, have you corrected the problem that plugged them up? If you haven't addressed that problem you will be wasting alot of money for nothing because it will clog your new cats too.

the cats are 12 years old i think they go bad after a while. am i right?

One of mine went bad and started rattling inside. I gutted it just to fix the rattling. Since I have one gutted and the other not, my Flowmaster 40 sounds a bit raspy. Wierd. To my surprise, no check engine light. :dunno:

i had the code ran and it came back cat and o2 sensor. i can tell a cat is bad because of the loss of power and you can feel the engine fighting it

Summits got lots of universal cats for under $100. It's not that much money to replace them anymore. It's just part of vehicle maintenance. Pretty sure it's Federal Law in the states... Not so much here in Canada. Most exhaust shops will replace everything from the manifold back with straight pipe... and even some will tell you how to get past the O2 sensors. Apparently the environment is the least of the Governments concern here...

maybe i should move to canada lol

Come on up!!! the weathers fine. Ok, actually here in Alberta, the weather has been CRAP lately. We got snow less than a week ago and it's been below freezing a couple times in the last week. I WANT SUMMER.
