I have a 1997 Mountaineer V8, and I'm having a little problem removing the drivers side front cat. I've successfully unbolted everything however I can't get the piece out of its hanger. It seems like you need to slip in back but the bar that holds the transmission seems to be restraining it from going all the way back.
Does anyone know how I can remove it? Please Help

Why are you trying to remove it? You know its against the law to remove it unless you plan on replacing it. Most times, you may have to cut it out.

Im in the process of replacing the part. And if I did have to cut it out, then how would I get the new one on the hanger?

You would have to have it welded it if you cut the cat. out. I need to have mine done, but I don't reel like spending 600 for the part. Good thing it went out 2 days after i smogged it.

Judging by my repair CD, it seems that you have to take the bracket with the rubber hangers off along with the converter / pipe assembly.

I tired doing so, but it seems like the bolt for that is blocked by the support bar for the transmission. Do I need to drop the transmission also?

Anyone know how I can access the bolt that holds the hangers in place?

Brace the transmission with a floor jack and then unbolt and take off the transmission crossmember. Be very care that the jack is holding the tranny securly in place, those suckers are HEAVY and you dont want it to fall out. You can also remove the transfer case skidplate thats behind the tranny crossmember to give you even more room to work.
