Got a similar issue with both my 93 Explorer and 97 Ranger. Both have the 4.0L with around 200k. I know the cats are plugged, that rotten egg smell. the CEL is already on in the Ranger, been on since 130k, for a bad o2 sensor I never replaced. both vehicles have trouble idling, and have loss of power. I just want to eliminate the cats. wondering if taking the cats out of them would affect anything besides causing the CEL to come on. I've read other forums that say it can affect the air fuel mixture and stuff like that on newer vehicles. i dont think it will in mine, just wanted to get a second opinion. i know cutting the cats out will cause them to fail inspection. i live in Iowa, and we don't have that here. any input appreciated.
