i noticed that there is like 2 converters made into one in the 91-94 explorers and i was wondering is this done for a specific emissions thing, or was it done becuase they figured it was a suv and they wanted it quiet, cause im really tempted to convert it to one but i still want to pass emsissions

I think they've got 2 to lower emissions, but you can pass with one. Some people swapped the dual with a single high-flow.

thanks...guess i know what i doin when it warms up :)... whats a good single high flow cat?

Magnaflow Car-Sound.

Yup. I swapped my 2 stockers w/ one Magnaflow high flow. Sounds good, increased performance a tad, and although we have no emissions here, I'd still pass. :D

jo, where did u get that? Do they make that for 99's? how much was it

eBay's got them for ~$40. It's just the cat, not direct-fit. You'll have to get it welded on.

link?

is it worth it? how much do I gain?

It replaces the two cats with just one?

To replace 2 cats with one, you'll need a muffler shop to weld a piece of pipe in place of the deleted cat (Unless of course you can weld and have piping on hand). And yes, I do think it's work it. Small gain in performance as well as an increase in exhaust volume and sound quality.

I think you want 2.25".

Yep, check husky's link above.

Ok, my exhaust is 2.25". So should I still get the 2.25" Cat?

Also, for those of you who have swapped the 2 cats for 1 hi-flow, where in the exhaust did you have it put in at? I have tried removing my cats, but even with lots of WD-40, etc. the thing will not come off and has stripped the head of it. Were you guys able to get yours out or did you leave both of the mounts there and have the hi-flow welded in between the 2 mounts for the stock cats? (If this doesn't make sense, let me know :D)

I think stock is 2". The direct-fit I bought by Carsound was 2.25", so that's probably the size you want. You may just have to cut the nuts off (yes, castrate the bolts). A shop should know where to weld the cat.

Ok thanks. :) I didn't even think about cutting off the nuts and just replacing the nuts/bolts. BTW, I have a Magnaflow 2.25" catback.

Yeah, I got a 2.25" cat too. The muffler shop will know what to do. They'll just hack the old stuff out and weld in the new.

It is my understanding that, well at least my explorer, NEEDS the cats. It needs them for the 02 sensors to properly work. I asked many shops to cut them out on my old truck and they said no because my truck needs it for the o2 sensors to work right. On the newer explorers if u look by the cats you will see an O2 there. Since u all are eairlier models I dont know about yours

Instead of replacing just one of the cats, maybe I can replace BOTH with magnaflow cats. I dont like the idea of replacing one with just a pipe because my truck needs it. If anyone else whos done this with my gen truck please chime in

The o2 sensors are in the y-pipe on our X's.
