If you are loading regular audio cd's (not mp3 or burned cds) and it gives you a "bad cd" message then either the player itself is dirty / the laser pickup is dirty or the disc itself is not spinning (as a result of a faulty or failing spindle drive mechanism.

When you insert the cd, can you hear if the cd is loading or spinning? If it does, then at least the motor/spindle assembly should be ok - but the pickup could still be dirty or smudged

Unfortunately, the only way to properly clean the laser/lens is to take the thing apart. Do not use one of those DVD/CD cleaners with a brush on the underside - those are not meant for slot-loading players.

If after cleaning and it still does the same thing, then it might be time for a new aftermarket deck or an oem replacement deck

goodluck

Whatever you do, don't pay to have it fixed. An $80 aftermarket deck will be much better. Of course you can spend much more, but the low end Pioneers, Sonys, etc. start at about $80 these days.

That would be my unit as well, looked at the refurbished units, new units and have decided in keeping my wheel controls i will add the aux input into my unit and just use my MP3 player instead.

Thanks to everyone for the info- I contacted the dealer and the cost to have repaired is more than buying one from a salvage yard. I am not sure what I am going to do at this point. I have given thought to an upgrade to a navagation unit. I do see on the board that members keep refering to 1st -2nd and 3rd generation of 2006 explorer, can anyone tell me how to find out which you have and how this determines how upgrades will work? I am thinking of upgrading to heated morrors & seats, ipod player, and the navagation unit. Any ifo welcome, Thanks again Glenda

Becareful if you buy the factory nav unit used for around your year. They have issues with it not being able to read the Nav disks. lots of threads on that here.
