Welcome to the best Explorer resource on the 'net!!

It's tough to tell what the problem may be with your locks. It could be the lock/unlock solenoids in the door, it could be a bad connection, bad remote, bad RAP module, or bad relay. I could take a shot at diagnosing the problem, but I'm not too familiar with the system myeslf, so I'll leave it up to the experts and others that have had the same problems.

One thing that may help: Do the lock/unlock buttons on the doors work?

Mine does the same thing on the drivers side door i can unlock all the doors but cant lock them, but on the pass side i can lock and unlock them. I just use the remote to lock them, or lean to pass side and do it.

Hi and welcome to the site.
I have a question.

Are you having a problem with just 1 door or are you having a problems with all 4 doors?

Hi there I am the proud owner of a 1999 explorer, I have had her for about 4 months and the central locking has done exactly the same thing?
the auto door lock has stopped working, and the remote will unlock as normal and it will set the alarm when you press the lock button it just wont pull the buttons down to lcok the door, can anybody help?????
Happy new year to all

if you can lock the doors from the switches / buttons at either the driver's or passenger side or cargo area, then its a connection problem to your PATS module OR a bad PATS module. If you can't cause them to lock from any switches, then you have a broken wire most likely at the drivers side door post.

Hi Budwich
Thank you very much for your reply and info, I will check for a broken wire at the weekend as I can not lock from any of the doors or the trunk.so fingers crossed its just a broken wire, is it likley to be in the flexible rubber between the car body and the door or will I have to remove the door panel etc, ?
once again thanks.

Actually, I looked at the drawings again... it probably the feed going to the unlock relay that are in the relay box #4 in the cargo panel in the back driver side. There is a splice depending on 4 door / 2 door (4 d -> somewhere near the rear washer pump, 2d --> somewhere near the rear speaker - driver's side)... at least in my 96 drawings.

hello from finland!!

i have explorer 4,0 1996 xlt and my problem is the door lock too.
i cant lock the any door from switches or remote. unlocking works great.
can anyone send me wiring diagrams for door locks? that i can find the proplem.

if i put wire (connect) on relay (87-30) it locks the all doors, and relay is working great (i chance them). the problem is somewhere else and i need wiring diagram to find it.

sorry my english.

Hi, I've been driving my explorer for almost a year like you describe. The locks open fine with buttons and keys, but won't lock down when driving or using buttons/keys, but the ALARM works fine, a real hazzle when I've accidentaly hit the lock-button and later on want to enter the car to get something.

I had my car for service in a ford garage here in the canarias and also in a ford service station in Oslo, norway, but they just didn't know where to start searching.
I bought a OBDII-cable and software but couldn't find any problems. I have opened all 5 doors and all panels to find a broken wire, but can't find anything. Is it possible that the central it self can be broken on one channel?

It seems like there is a mayor fault in the central locking system as I know 3 other owners of explorer 98-2001 who has had to change the physical locks of their cars and now this problem I share with you guys!

its not a "coded" problem, so an odb "thing" ain't going to help. I hope that when you were "looking" for a broken wire that you weren't looking for the wire. Looking at electrical problems is like looking at a woman, she might look OK but when you get down to it, she is no good.... get a meter and check the areas suggested and then start tracing with a meter.

ok, I will get a meter and start searching.

I will post to you when I find the problem.

did you find problem yet?
or anyone else?

My problem is the opposite. i can lock all doors with driver button but not unlock
...passenger side works ok.

any advice?

Hope this helps someone. I have a 4 door and I couldn't lock from drivers door but I could unlock. The other doors were fine at the time. In time it would have been the same thing on the passengers side.
My problem was a splice in the "Lock" wires, Pink/Yellow. The only splice point for these wires was located under the saddle of the drivers side rear door. You could not see the problem without removing the shrink tubing from the wires. The splice had corroded and although the drivers lock signal was compromised, it was only a matter of time before the passenger side broke loose from the splice. I cut the wires back clean and re-spliced.
The unlock portion of the switch would be on a splice group color coded Pink/Light Green. Although I'm not sure, it's probably located in the same area.
The cargo lock/unlock switch is on its own circuit back to RAP module. If this switch is also not working then you have a different problem.

hi!

i finally got inspiration to research the problem.
edit:
the problem was the splice point under the back seat just like b33p3rmcg.

thank you very much!!

For future searches...

Problem: could not lock doors from driver's switch; all other switches locked/unlocked all doors fine.

The pink/yellow wire inside of the rubber conduit from the body to the driver's side door was broken at a previously spliced location. It was really tight in there so I pulled the wire into the cabin footwell and spliced in a longer piece in hopes of relieving future strain.
