Maybe somebody can help with my 2000 explorer 4.0 sohc..I changed the guides and tensioners..the truck ran fine before but rattling like crazy..i was bringing to my house for repair and it ran out of gas..burnt fuel pump which i replaced...now i did not set the timing when i replaced everything thinking it was ok...took care in not moving anything, locked the cam down...got it all back together and it will not start...if you try to start it then let it sit a while it will hit a lick for a second when you try to start it and then nothing..just cranks..its got good fuel pressure on the fuel rail..its getting fire...if it jumped time will it not start at all?? i figured it would start but run very ragged...any help would be appreciated cause its driving me crazy...thanks to everyone!

No, it most likely would not start. When my timing chain slipped, it would do the same thing (almost sound like was going to start for a few seconds). From what I've read, if you have the timing on one of the cam's 180degrees off, it would start, but run rough.

Keep in mind, it's an interference engine, so if you have it timed wrong, you could be doing damage to the engine.

like he said it's probably out of time.

hopefully nothing has been damaged.

ANny check engine lights: maybe a sensor unpluged. Check Crankshft Position sensor as well.

How did you hold the cams from turing? what about the crank??

the check engine light is on when cranking...i hooked a hand held computer to it and it passed all codes...when changing the cassette we marked the chain and sprocket...zipped tied them together...locked the cam in position with vicegrips...im at the thinking now it jumped time before i took it apart...
