I'm getting ready to turn in my 01 Sport as it’s at the end of its lease and I’m getting ready to take delivery of a new Limited. I'm trying to make sure everything is in decent shape so the dealer won't try to nickel and dime me on the 01. I've been hearing the wear indicators (little chirping noise) from the front pads, so I figured it's time to change them.

I've changed front pads before, but never on an ABS equipped vehicle. Anything I should be wary of or any special procedures to follow? Any recommendations on a cheap, yet decent OEM replacement set? I’d get something better if I was going to keep it long term, but since I’m not I don’t want to spend a lot. Thanks in advance.

I did the fronts on my 1997 AWD yesterday. Pretty easy. The front ends on all 4wd/awd 2nd gens are the same.

1) Take off the wheel
2) Unbolt the caliper
3) Unbolt the caliper braket
4) Use a crowbar to pry off the rotors
5) Pep boys turns rotors for $8/each
6) I really like Autozone's PFC pads, but any pad by Raybestos works well also. Also purchase some caliper slide grease, and a hardware kit with new slides and boots.
7) Install the new rotors, and the caliper mounting braket.
8) Install caliper slide hardware.
9) Use lube on caliper slides - never get lube on the pad or rotor surface
10) Compress the caliper pistons - there are two - using a c-clamp and a block of wood. Open the bleeder screw to relive the hydraulic fluid.
11) Put a little grease on the backs of the pads.
12) reseat the caliper
13) Install new rubber boots, grease the caliper bolts and install
14) Bleed each caliper.

The ABS sensor is in the hub assembly, there is nothing to worry about with the rotors or calipers. If you really want to skimp, Autozone has pads for as cheap as $10/set.
Good luck!
