Hey I want to know of a cheap limited-slip locker for the rear? I just want one to give me a little more umph, nothing really expensive, but something to get the job done.

How easy is it to install, how to lock it, etc...?

Thanks!!

The cheapest and best way to do this is to rebuild the factory trak-lok. It will cost you about 60 bucks and a few hours of work and should last you atleast 20K miles of wheeling. By then you will want a locker anyway :D

There's even a trick you can do to tighten up the posi to make it "bite" harder.

How would I do that? I don't really know anything about the trac-loc. Do all X's have that?

I didn't think X's had POSI.

I think after a certain build date, all Explorers have them. I just replaced mine when I had 4.56 gears put in, with a Auburn Gear LSD. The reason was that the trac-lok hemi can break. It can shear the main pin under extreme duress.

all explorers dont have an lsd after a certain build date... it was an option and normally came with lower gearsets and on towing package equipped vehicles.... Explorers dont have "Posi" Posi is a registered trademark of the old Eaton units used in GM vehciles of the past.... however, ford does have the trac-loc that is a ford limited slip

Just take the s-clamp, spider gears, and friction clutches out, and replace them. Also you will need to take a couple more things out, I can't remember.

Guys I was talking about posi.......as in positive traction (i.e. limited slip or locker)

If you don't have the factory L/S, look into an Eaton posi. That's what I have and it's great! They've redesigned it over the years and now they're practically bulletproof. Mine was about $300 from West Coast Differentials, I think. It works well street, strip, and offroad. Good luck!

I also have the Eaton Posi !,and it is a well made L/S
but not a locker {I wish it was}
what I would like is a locker that was an L/S when not locked

Bill,
I read lately that the Eaton posi will actually send MORE torque to the tire with traction rather than 50% in some conditions. Seems to me like that's better than a locker. But anyway, The Eaton has only unlocked on my twice offroad, both times I wasn't going anywhere anyway, I was high centered. My Eatons (charger and posi) have gotten me places most 2wds wouldn't think of :)

But anyway, they're great l/s' ;)
