Check engine light at 90,000 miles????

My check engine light came on today at exactly 90,300 miles. That just seems a little to ironic that there is also a 90,000 mile service that is recommended by Ford. Should I just reset the computer and see if it goes away or further investigate. BTW, I looked over the X pretty thoroughly and saw nothing. Any thoughts?

Well, the only way to know what the check engine light means is to pull the code with a code reader, or take it in and have someone read it.

With 90,000 miles it could be the O2 sensors going on you, but without knowing the code I'm just speculating...they like to wear out about that time...

Read the trouble code.

Ford does not use any type of mileage sensors that trip the CEL. The light is due to a sensor failure.

Auto-Zone or other parts places will read your codes for free in hopes you buy the repairs from them.

Thanks, I will get Autozone to read the codes, but isn't there a way to read the codes without a reader?

I went to Autozone and the guy there was very helpful. He read and erased the code, told me it was my EGR valve. He also said, as many of you have in past posts, that the problem could probably be fixed by cleaning it with carb cleaner, and not to buy a new one until I had done everything possible to clean it. I just cleaned it and it looks like it worked. thanks for the info guys.

On OBD II systems, which he has, I am unaware of reading codes w/o a reader/scanner. OBD I would allow codes to be read w/o a scanner/reader.

If you do get the code for the EGR again (depending on which one it was), don't automatically go and replace the EGR, usually it isn't the EGR at all.

I agree with Robb. Often a failed PFE <do I have that right?, I don't have my book in front of me but is the companion sensor used on some engines from Ford> (part of the EGR system) will be the culprit as often as the EGR valve or more often.

There is another post on here on CE lights and mileage which contains some good advice. Glad you got yours checked !
