Im getting a code back telling me that the EGR has excessive flow. I was told that it may be stuck up with carbon. I want to pull the thing off and clean it. Where is it located on the engine? What does it look like. Does anybody have a procedure to do this.

Thanks
Mark

First of all the egr valve is located on the right hand bank (looking from the front). It looks like a disk with a tube coming out of the top (sorry no pics). This works in conjunction with the DPFE sensor which is also mounted on the right bank rocker cover. (looks like a small black box with two pipes under and a plug socket). It is recommended that you only clean the egr with a wire wheel or screwdriver as any solvent will damage the diaphragm. There is a full test procedure in the Haynes workshop manual. Hope this helps a bit.

Is this it?

I have a v8, 97. There is a silver UFO shaped thing right at the back of the engine with one small hose comming out of the top. Its held down by 2 bolts. Is this it? I just need to pull it apart and clean it right?

Yes that sounds like it. Be careful when you clean it though as it is very easy to damage the diaphragm

It is very difficult to get to the bolts on the egr valve. You will need to cut a wrench to get it short enough to be able to turn in the tight area. I cleaned mine, put it back on then it was still bad. Probably worth replacing due to the difficulty of replacing
