Ok... after 108K miles of Excellent Exploration w/ our 1996 Explorer... finally for once the Check Engine light came on. Everything seems to be running great and gauages read good.

I assume it is an sensor. Which sensor do you fellas think it is?

Also after replaceing the sensor... can I disconnect the battery and about 30 minutes later hook the battry back up and should it reset the computer and no more (hopefully) check engine light comes back on??

Thanks for any idea on sensors etc...

Go to Autozone and get the codes pulled.

It probably either O2 sensors or the DPFE.

108K, those O2's are probably BLACK... Be ready though, they're about $60 each and you have 4... Thats just for parts at Autozone if I remember right... If you're going to do them yourself, make it easy on yourself when swapping them, pull the center console and below it is a small plate you can remove (or so they say) and that will make the plugs easier to get to...

I read about this AFTER doing mine... Matt and I had a real ***** of a time with them...

My 96 is a V6. I had no problem changing them out.

hi, It was the Bank1 o2 sensor.

Oh I can't take off the sensor off the exhaust... I think it heated on it. Pain in the a$$ to attempt... I will strip the nut out. So off it goes to the shop to get taken off :(

Just a tip

I just had to replace one and used the box end of a long wrench. If you break off the plastic locking tab of the connector, the box end will slip over the connector down to the nut on the sensor. It still takes a knock of the hammer to loosen it.

Oh I even used an torque bar and that sensor is seized on it. I can turn it either was and it has an little play.. and after that,, no budge either way. Its sad...but I will end up breaking the nut... so I can't take the chance :(

Just had to replace Bank 2, Sensor 1 on my '96 Explorer. Curious question in follow up...Some shops say it has 4 O2 sensors, Auto Zone says it has 2, which is correct???

Not to mention that since the sensors was replaced, the check engine light for it continues to come on...Ford claims likely a bad computer that won't clear the signal and allows it to periodically pop on...any thoughts?

my V6 96 has three that I could find.
