Hey there Guys and Gals,

Today coming back from work my check engine light came on. I have a 97 ohv 4.0L and i was woundring what is the best way about finding out what causing the check engine light to come on. Should i take my x to the dealer and have them hook up the scanner to my x to see what codes it give off. Or should i go some where else and have it done. Or should i just go out and phurchase a scanner and check the code's my self. I kind of want to phurchase a scanner. Just not quiet sure where to get one any suggestions where how much ???.

Call around to some local parts stores (esp AutoZone) and ask if they scan OBD-II codes for free. Most likely, you will find one that will. No point in buying an expensive scanner just to retrieve a code. Harbour Freight offers a code reader for around $50.

My reader has paid for itself many times over, I consider it essential if you have an OBD II vehicle.

I just purchased that code reader this morning. I used it on my Dad's Windstar and found the problem with no problems operating it at all. Cleared the codes and did the IM test on it. Unfortunately I didn't know it wasn't finished and it came up with an error code afterwards because of switching the engine off before the scan was complete. I hooked her up to my 97 Ex 4.0 OHV and drove 40 kilometres home, did the scan on it before i left and no codes, did the IM test and by the time I was almost to my driveway the test was completed and ok.

What are the thoughts on anyone out there who has one of these Eqqus units?

Hoppy...
