My check engine light is on and I was wondering if you all could give me some advice as to what the problem might be.

I got it scanned the other day for the code and it came up with EGR Valve as the problem. So I replaced the EGR valve, reset the PCM and the next day, the light is back on and there is again, a loss of power. Could it be the solenoid to the vaccum that is bad or something before that that would still show EGR?

Just thought I'd try to trace this down with people who know about these vehicles before I go spending money and dancing around the problem.

I just found this board today BTW, and it looks like I'll be getting some good information here from what I've read and seen so far. I just got my '96 XLT 4.0 4x4 (4 dr.) (everything is four, LOL) last week and I'm looking to make some minor modifications here and there.

Thanks in advance for any info you might have.

The actual code itself would be useful. Often the DPFE goes bad and shows up as an EGR problem. In fact the DPFE probably accounts for a majority of system faults on EGR's in vehicles so equipped. Do you know the numerical code thrown?

I don't remember off of the top of my head. I'm going to take it back tomorrow and I'll make a note of the code.

I'll second the DPFE... Had the same problem about two weeks ago. I replaced the DPFE and the two rubber hoses that connect to it, and haven't had a CEL since.

How much does that part cost?

Seems to me I got one last year for about $45 or so... They are readily available in aftermarket shops like AutoZone and Kragen and Pep Boys. You might call and check.

I went to AutoZone tonight and got the PCM rescanned after the EGR valve change and the same codes came up. They were, EGR System Insufficient Flow and Oxygen Sensor Low Voltage, Bank 1 sensor 1.

Does this look like the DPFE and the driver's side O2 both, or would/could one cause both of these codes. Either way both parts run ~50 bucks a piece, so I guess I can do them one at a time.

I checked the hoses coming from the DPFE and the looked to be in good shape.

The guy didn't even know what DPFE was and I had to look it up in the Haynes manual to show it to him. I copied down the part number off of the X and gave it to him but he couldn't find it. Then told me to come back tomorrow and talk to a guy who was a parts expert and could tell me what I needed so I would have to spend extra money.

I figure you guys are more of an expert on the subject than this guy so what do you think?

I'm having trouble relating the two, but often I can't figure out dirt when it's obvious later. The Insufficient flow is more than likely the DPFE. Here's what Ford says about that code:

"The EGR flow test rate is performed during a steady state when engine speed and load are moderate and EVR duty cycle is high. The monitor compares acrtual DPFE circuit voltage to a desired EGR flow voltage for that state to determine id EGR flow rate is acceptable or insufficient. The DTC's associated with this test are P0401 and P1408" [note the 1 ahead of the 408 means it is a mfgr "enhanced" code is all.]

So this one could be the EVR or DPFE or EGR. My money is on the DPFE.

The low voltage on the O2 is hard for me to correspond to the former problem. Fix number one and let's re-address the O2 sensor. You have OBD-II and could get real time data on it once you have the EGR code nailed.

Well, I just replaced the driver's side front O2 sensor and the DPFE, got them at AutoZone for ~100 bucks for both, Advanced wanted 77 dollars just for the DPFE.

I'm about to take the X out for a test drive, hopefully the check engine light will be no more. If not I guess I'll post again asking what else might be wrong.

Wish me luck.

Well, I'm back. After several WOT runs at varying speeds (normally kicks the check engine light back on) still no light. It looks like I might have taken care of the problem.

Next, to get the plugs and wires changed.

Congrats! Thanks for following up with us.

egr issue

i have a 2000 ranger xlt that came up with the same code.first instinct was to r and r the o2 sensors, that wasn't it,then replaced the egr,not it either(by the way when your throwing parts at it without properly diagnosing the problem is called slaminosis) this guy kept telling me it's the dpfe.finally broke down and replaced it and that was the problem.he said 9 out of 10 times at ford it was always the dpfe and ford knew of this but couldn't work out the bug with it and the obd2.he said expect it to go bad again in 25-35k miles or so but i don't expect it too because i'm prepping a 5.0l for it to be installed this winter. although i do have a couple lying around new!
