Okay i got the codes on Autozone they are P0174 and P0171

Do a search on P0174. I came up with 30 threads, check them out I'm sure they will help!

Welcome, let us know if you need further assitance and also let us know what you find to help others.

low fuel pressure, vacuum leak, dirty MAF, bad O2 sensors (though one wouldn't expect both to go bad at the same time), bad wiring between the O2 sensors and the PCM, bad O2 sensor ground, dirty fuel injectors not feeding fuel into the cylinders, I'm sure there are others that I'm not thinking of.

99 Explorer, 4.0 SOHC correct? Say 30k to 40k mileage wise?! Maybe slightly more but I doubt it!

Lets see if I can lay out the symptoms you maybe having.

Now that its getting cool you might get a stumble, rough start, or even stall the the a.m. and then it runs fine the rest of the day.

Codes are P0174 and P0171 which as stated are lean which menas you have a vaccum leak before the the two upstream 02's.

Cause: Upper and Lower Intake Gaskets

Send me your VIN# and I can tell you if your still covered under the program code which is 00M12 in which you should be covered at any local delaership!!!

This is a kit that entails a new cam tensioner on the drivers side head and all the gaskets!!!

Hope it helps, Rob

Well that might change things on the diagnostic end!!!

You may have a dirty or bad MAF sensor. You can get those codes from that being bad thus showing the 02's for both banks!!!

I'll run your VIN# for you and PM you back. Either way I would say your going to end up at a dealer due to you need to find out where your MAF reading is at and you'll need a diagostic scan tool for that part!

Alrigth its been a whole month and my check engine light is stil on :(

What have you done? What didn't you do? What codes are you still getting? Give us an update and we will try and help. The more info and specifics the better.

i would go after the TPS first then the MAS except that if they caused the problem with the O2 sensors then i would expect them to throw a code too. might want to look at the loose/ bad gasket intake manifold thing.

i am still getting the P0171 and P0174 still, my husband cleaned out the MAF which was spotless by the way and he replace the O2 sensor, the light turned off for like 30 minutes and then it turned back on. If I have the car on but on park and then I take off again it starts to stall , i hate this truck, i wish i could get rid of it

Lol why didn't you say something when I was at your house yesterday I could have looked at it for you lol. Btw you have the OHV engine not the Sohc. When Ed changed the o2 sensors did he do both of them or just one?

In my past experiences your lower intake gasket is going to be the problem! Thats why I wanted you to clean the MAF first but thats not to say that it isn't still reading correctly! But with the mileage you have logged I wouldn't doubt the gasket(s) being bad, seen it before and will see it again. Just so you are aware there is a new updated style gasket that replaces the old one! I would highly advise you to get the new OEM updated one being its a steel core with rubber lining which is MUCH better than the original style. But this is only speculation based on the information you have given me and my experiences as a Ford mechanic. LOL!
