When the check engine light is on, that is the computer's (PCM) way of telling that it can see a problem. The EEC-IV system has built in diagnostic tests to help you find the problem. The "quick-test" (aka pulling codes) is simple and requires only a short piece of wire to perform, and the codes are output as flashes of the check engine light. Personally, I like to use a voltmeter instead of the check engine light for code output, but it's not necessary to run the test. If you want to do it yourself, there are instructions at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html .
