check engine problem

My check engine light came on, but the port to check it will not work. I went to three autozones and each one could not get anything on their scanner, nothing would turn it on. I checked the fuse and it was okay. How am I to check the codes if the port won't work?

Did they try to scan it with the engine on or off?

Did you check ALL fuses or just one? It's the same circuit as the cig lighter
