Chek engine light on off on off on off....

My problem is that my check engine light comes on and goes off in a few seconds, but it happends randomly, I toke it to have it cheek, but the reader did't show anything, and the manual says that if it goes off the problem is fixed but is anoying to loose power when it goes on.
When it goes on I loose power for the time it is on and then it fixes by it self until it hapends againg.
I did changed the plug wires, and have a coplete service, maybe is the oxigen sensors, where are they located ? do I have to change them ? or just clean them?

I seemed to be having the same problem, but the only thing different it was only on the freeway when I had to drive 1,000 miles one way the check engine light stayed on pretty much the whole way there. Ocasionally, it would shut off but then reappear, then when I got back to local driving it's gone. And since I got back from texas I never seen it again! I hear the explorers and rangers have some type of problem with a valve or sensor when driven' long distances but it's not something severe if you don't have to replace it.

You checked the codes and came up with nothing? It should have a code in memory, even if the light's not on at the time. Does your code reader have an option to check hard fault codes and memory codes? Maybe you only checked the hard fault codes?

What manual says the problem is fixed if the light goes off? That's a bunch of BS.

Your problem could be a multitude of things. Definitely find the code for the problem so you can easily fix the problem.

Here's a site with a way to check the codes yourself, along with a listing of what all the codes are. All you need is a test light or voltmeter and a person to help you.

I do actualy do not own a code reader, I toke it to a shop to have it done and that was what they told me, but I am thinking of geting one and do it my self..

I've seen that symptom on 2 first gen explorer.. ours and ntrpriz (whom I haven't seen in a while). On both of ours on longer trips the check engine light would turn on.. and then go off. Cleaning the MAS on both or our vehicles fixed it.. Hopefully yours can be fixed that easy

i had same problem when i went to los coyotes back in april... i ran codes the next day when the light wasnt on and it said rich/lean conditions for exhuast gas oxygen sensor.....bad 02 sensor....

Hi guys, maybe you can help me. I've had this problem when going down the highway at a constant speed. It doesn't ever come on at any other time unless i'm at a constant speed for more than a few seconds. Sometimes it will come and go off a few seconds at a time, and sometimes it will stay on. Any ideas?

I too, have had a similar problem. I posted a message a few months back (see "Bucking and Surging w/ check engine light") On my '94, the check enging light will only come on during highway driving, after some time. Then it will alternate between on and off, actually running better when the light is on; it will surge and "suck for air" with a loss of power. With city driving, it uses more gas, and now continually has a loss of power. I have changed the MAF but problem returned. I cleaned the new MAF and took OUT the K&N air filter after hearing oil from it can ruin the MAF, but the problem still exists. I haven't had the cash to try to fix anything else. I would like to check O2 sensors, FPR, check for Vacuum leaks, and a few other things.

Yes I would like to try that too. Does power seem to come and go on your truck? Like one minute it can get up and go and another minute it can't get out of it's own way?

Yeah, that sounds pretty much right on the money. Sometimes it runs perfect. Actually right after I fill it with gas it runs better (am I dreaming?) and some days I just want to do this - Some days the 5spd transvestite (after all, its only PRETENDING to be a REAL transmission) shifts fine and other days, arrrggghhh.

ARE YOU SERIOUS ABOUT THE GAS THING??? Dude no way.........I SWEAR my truck runs better for like five minutes right after I fill up.....no joke. You are not dreaming my friend......

Hey GTRIDER ya know now that you mentioned "IAC" I think that's the problem I was thinking of but I just couldn't think of the name. What does IAC stand for anyways and what is the purpose of it? And also does anyone know where I can purchase, and what brand names I should look for in a code scanner for my computer, maybe something that will tell me the exact numbers of the trouble code?

Ok guys I think I did solve the problem, after changing the plug wires, cleaning the oxigen sensors, and all the air intakes with compres air the problem stoped, at least for the 2 days I have try it.
Yes for me did also happend when going on a high way at a constant sped.

OK since we are on the code thing. My check engine light will come on and OD/off light will flash almost every day for a short period. It seems to happen when it's cold, like in the morning.
Any ideas?

I am changing the wires this weekend and getting a complete diagnosis next week at Ford. Someone told me it could be the fuel pump - could be causing lean condition which could trigger the Check Engine light on the highway driving. We'll see.

OK, changed the wires, and checked a couple plugs but they didn't look too bad (gap okay). And...you guessed it, NO difference. I had the fuel pressure checked next (by Ford) and turns out that's good which rules out fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter. My next step is to get the diagnosis done, and maybe check the injectors. How do you clean the O2 sensors?

Hey turkey, I beleive I may have fixed my truck today. Have you examined the FPR closely? Is there a vacuum line that runs into it? The one on mine had come off, apparently causing all those problems.

I will have to take a look at that, Jason, it could cause a lot of problems. Unfortunately, I seem to have a few other problems popping up too. Hey, is this a great website or what?
