That shouldn't change anything. Why do you want to take off one of the cats? The cats on Explorers flow well and don't really affect the exhaust flow.

I had the 2.5" pipe and didn't notice any negative side effects. The muffler that he is looking into is not a glasspack. It is a chambered muffler, that IMO sounds better than a 40 series. If there is a peformance difference between 2.25" and 2.5" you most likely won't notice it, I definitely did not.

ok. my explorer has a 2" pipe on it so if i put a 2.5" pipe it would increase the performance. but if you had a 2.25" and made it a 2.5" it wouldnt make a difference

I've run a bunch of different exhaust systems on my ex. Everything from stock, to straight pipes lightning style. I never noticed a major difference with any of them. I did feel a loss of power though with the straight pipes. Having a performance exhaust on these trucks is mainly for sound than performance. You may see some mileage gains, but HP and TQ gains are slim. I believe that if you go from stock to 2.25" you will see some minor gains, up to 2.5" your just gaining more sound and tone, after that you will likely start seeing some losses. In my experience, 2.5" is a good size to go with, gives you a good choice in mufflers, a good size to get a good tone, and doesn't have a negative impact on performance. The reason I like this muffler so much, is that it is the one that sounded the best to me.

just wondering what you did to your last cat?

I removed the entire assembly and knocked the insides out of it. Did it change the sound? Yes. Would I do it again, most likely not, but what I would have done was had a different y-pipe set up made and used a single magnaflow cat instead. The empty cat allows some resonance and I think added some raspyness to the tone. I did leave the front cat intact, did not trigger a CEL. Is it possible for you to get a picture of your exhaust system? If you could post a pic, I can make some recommendations for you. Do you have a ballpark figure on how much you want to spend on exhaust?

how about walker mufflers? (what rockauto sells) they are like $30ish. They have a "pro fit" "sound FX" and a "quiet-flow". I think the sound fx would be best for sound hence the name, but i've had no experience with them. Anyone?

Walker mufflers are typically cheaper stock replacements. They are not the best as far as sound and flow go.

i've pretty much made up my mind on the cherry bomb pro and 2.5 in pipe. now i'm just trying to figure out what i'm gonna do with my cats, because after crawling up under my truck last night i realized that i have 4 cat looking things, and of course there is a sensor on the pipe after the last one

Is that with the glasspack? I think your best bet for an exhaust would be to keep the cats stock and where they are. Just have them set up 2.5" pipe from the cats back. You can also add a nice stainless tip thats 3-3.5" in diameter and that should help deepen the tone some more for you. Doesn't sound too bad for a glasspack though.
