Anyone know about the lights on/key still in chime. Mine chimes with the key out and lights off, starts when the drivers door is opened. If I leave my lights on I do not know because of that Ding, ding, ding.

Is this something that is resolved by replacing the ignition switch?

I am finding more and more little problem things about this explorer. I still like it. :D

Well what it does is it dings all the time, as soon as the drivers door is opened it dings, so if I turn the lights on and forget to turn them off there is no change in the dinging as it is there all the time.

Same if I leave my key in the ignition, I would not know because of the on going ding.

I thought the ding would only be there if the lights are left on or the key is left in the ignition and the door is opened.

It should not ding just because the door is open would it???

I hope that make sense. Maybe I am missing something.

It shouldn't ding when just your door is open. Check to make sure that the ignition is to the actual off position. I know with mine, you can take the key out when it's not all the way to off, but mine is the first generation.

Other than that some sensor is being tripped. It either thinks you key is still in the igition, or that your lights are on.

If your keys are in it it should ding, and ding faster when the lights are on. Does is ding fast?

No, thats the problem the ding remains the same with key in lights on etc. There is something up.

The only change is when I turn the key on, the ding becomes slower then stops if I wait about 10 seconds, (this is without starting the truck). If I start the truck right away it stops right away.

I had a Taurus with a similiar problem, in my case the problem was the ignition switch. I never fixed it, it would've cost far too much. I'd start there, personally.

Yeah, my guess is it always thinks the keys are in it.

Yeah, open your door, and wiggle the ignition switch(without the key in) back and forth to see if it shuts off....

yeah, sounds like the switch is culprit..... my chime will sometimes come on while driving..... but thats becuase i know i have a short somewhere... my drivers door isnt even hooked up to any wiring at all... i think water got into the dash, and moisture trips it... sometimes i start my truck in the morning, and it starts dinging... wont turn off until i get to work......... but thne again, my truck is open to the elements and well special.....

You might want to unplug your chime there Jim.....

I did try the wiggle trick, no help. I will need to check into it some more this week.

Thanks to everyone for all the help.

Maybe the pin thaty senses your key is stuck in. Maybe a light spray of wd-40 on your key might loosen it up. It has done wonders on my door locks.

Here's a better question: where is the chime located so he can just disconnect it? I have looked numerous times for where the chime is located and haven't found it. Mine just drives me insane and I feel it would be better if it were just disconnected.

That's not neccesarily better. If it worked it would warn you of you keys being in the car, or leaving your lights on.

The dinger thing

Glad to hear I'm not the only person with that problem.
Took mine to the dealer to have the cruise button replaced and when I got it back the dinger goes off every time the door is opened. I haven't taken it back. I called the the service manager and he said he would call me back. He hasn't.

I'm wanting to dosconnect mine also. Someone tell me how

If you take it in to the dealer and get the problem resolved please post the results.
Thx

When I bought mine I checked with the original dealer that it was purchased from. I was checking for recalls and any repair work performed.

They told me the only repair on record was the Multiswitch replacement.

Is it possible this switch has anything to do with the chime?

I am going to check on some fuses, maybe I can pull one to verify it is the "key in" and not the "lights on" that is making the chime go on.

I really want to make it work right, I have left my lights on more than once in the past.

The multifuncion switch isn't close to the chime, tho they may have damaged the wiring coming from the key. Is the ding 2 or 4 per second? I can post the wire color for just the keys in dinger for you later. If you cut and isolate that wire your lights on chime would still work.
