2002 XLT
Ok, just bought a 2002 XLT. When first drove the beast it was doing some "slipping" when excellerating, which I thought was in the tranny. Now the tranny has been overhauled and works great, but still seems like there is "choking" when excellerating, but not all the time. Any ideas what may be causing this, or how to trouble shoot to find out what may be causing it?

Anyone else with problems similar to this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Actually it only happens when I put my foot into it. If i take off slowly, it doesnt happen at all. But if I go to excellerate at a fast pace, then it "coughs"

it could even be your spark plugs, i just replaced mine and it chokes too but i have to check mine again cause one didnt go in all the way

I havent done anything with any of the sensors or even the injectors, which I was given the idea it might also be. When we got the vehicle, the only work done was the tranny.

They also replaced the plugs thinking that might have been the cause of it. I havent done much with it, just trying to get some ideas of what may be causing it, so when I go in, they know about where to start.

I have a 02 XLT with the same problem. I've only had it about 3 months. Let me know what you find out.

Does it choke when accelerating out of a corner? If so it's the crappy Drive-by-wire. The drive-by-wire can cause hesitation or bogging.

BrooklynBay: Found out this morning, with it being about 50 degrees outside that it doesnt "choke" when excellerating. Would the cold air have anything to do with it?

rtgreen> No, it does not choke coming out of a corner, it was only doing it when putting foot into it and excellerating.

Coughing/ Injector Cleaner

Well we think we may have an injector problem. If you take off slowly it won't do it, but if you try to increase speed up a hill, or trying to take off too fast, it starts coughing. Also going up that hill, if you accelerate to fast, it starts coughing, but if you gradually increase the speed, you can usually make it up the hill with only minimal coughing. We also found out that if you put your foot to the floor, more than likely it won't do it, but bring your foot out of it a little and the coughing starts back up.

My father suggested maybe ignition, but even when it is idling, we notice some rough idle to it.

We haven't taken it in yet, because still waiting for the extended warranty to "kick in". Bought it July 30, and they told me about two months on the paper work for it to go into effect. So patiently waiting so that way all it will cost me is $100. Thought about putting in some injector cleaner, but also would like to know what kind is the best cleaner to put in.

There are professional fuel injector cleaners made my OTC, and KEM that use a special kit to connect directly to the fuel rail. The engine idles on the chemical for a few minutes (not on gasoline). You have to disconnect the fuel pump for it to work.

I'm having the same problem on my 1996 4.0, and I think i'm going to start with cleaning the MAF sensor
I think thats what it is on mine, plus also because it will suddenly change rpm when driving as though i were pushing the gas pedal in and out

I am having a similar problem.
During driving conditions some of the time the vehicle acts up and seems to miss fire. (so the dealership said)
It acts like it has no power and bogs down. (under no load) If I accelerate quickly it will go and then bog down for a second and stay at a certain rpm and then take off again.
It has died on me a few times but only during idle and when it is still cold.

The dealership changed the following:
-fuel filter
-plugs, wires, 1-coil, 8 coil wire boots
-cleaned MAS
-air filter

They said that the engine was misfiring erraticlly on all cylinders and that the fuel pump was putting out 5lbs over specs.

Any help would be great.
Thanks- Jeff

I am not sure, if so do you think that it could be a Throttle Position Sensor?
Also, How do I check for throttle by wire?
Thanks,
Jeff

I cleaned my MAF sensor, and the car runs better than ever. I cleaned it with some electrical contact cleaner, that I got for a few dollars.

I would try that. Worked great for me.
