whenever i floor it, the front end makes all sorts of chunking and bumping noises like something is trying to catch but slips. i dont notice any performance lags and it has been doing it eer since i got the car. all i can think of is that the automatic 4wd is thinking about kicking in, but never does. so far no damage, but the noise is making me a little nervous. anyone have this problem? anyone know how to fix it?

pin point the noise

I was having some noise a while back, it sounded like it was up front as well, but its hard to tell. What I did to find it is put the whole thing up on jack stand, then started it up and put it in gear. It didn't make the noise at first....so I stepped on the break to cause a little friction....there it was. I had a friend lay off to the side (not under) and listen. I sounded like it was coming from the trasfer case. Under closer examination, it was a broken U-Joint on the transfer case side of the rear drive shaft. I later discovered a bad cv joint in the front drive shaft that was clunking in four wheel drive....with your set up it could be hard to trouble shoot, but maybe this will give you some help. Good luck!
