Please forgive me for this newbie question. I searched previous threads but I am still a bit at a loss.

What is the "MAF"?

Where is it?

How do I clean it?

Why would I clean it?

I have a 93 Explorer XLT with a Jasper rebuild engine in it. Do I still need to worry about this?

Mass Air Flow

Its on top, right afte the long black air intake.

With electronic clearner. But find the thread.

Couldn't hurt.

Since the stock one is now 13 years old, I got a replacement for $100. After core rebate, it was just under $70. I did it myself in about 10 minutes. Already i notice the engine not idling as hard. I'll take it for a test spin. It is completely necessary to disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes? It's on there pretty tight.

If you don't, the computer will gradually adjust for the new MAF. Disconnecting the battery forces it to do it RIGHT NOW. :p

Disconnect the battery, if your cables are that old and hard to get off you might as well replace the cable too. Only around $10

Is this it?

Yup that's it. You need to disconenct the large black air hosing and the four bolts on the MAF (the air filter is under this). Replace with the new MAF in the same direction (air flow) and wallah!

I did it today for the first time- 10 minutes total.

Nah, just take out the 2 torx 20 secure (hole in the middle) screws & repalce the electronics. No need to do the whole housing unless its damaged in some way. Before buying one, try to clean the little fillaments. It's easy & $100 lighter on the wallet. Unless the things are physically broke, cleaning is all it needs. Cleaned mine in about 20 minutes with contact spray & q-tips during a New England 'dusting' (3" plus)

Yea,Walter's got it.Just a few minutes of cleang and it's good as new.Just be careful with the filament when you clean it.Wait a few minutes for it to dry then put it back in.
