All,
I cant beleive I have never been advised by FORD or my FORD buddies how important cleaning your MAF is. I finally did it this weekend (1996 XLT V8 since new) for the first time in over 200000 miles. What a difference this made. Especially since I had a K&N filter it's entire life and the oil from the filter probably has coated it every time I changed it out... The advice is to do it after every Air Filter change. Do it!

Oiled filters are known to foul the MAF. That's why they are not recommended for the Explorer. However, if you must have one then yeah, cleaning the MAF after every air filter change/re-oil, is probably advisable. I figure that using a high quality non-oiled air filter and changing it regularly is more than acceptable. And, you don't have to mess with cleaning the MAF on a regular basis. But, to each his own...

How to Clean K&N Air Filter Products
K&N replacement air filters that fit in the factory air box can go up to 50,000 miles before cleaning is required and large conical filters on a K&N air intake system can go up to 100,000 miles before needing to be cleaned, depending on your driving conditions. If your K&N air filter is used in dusty or off-road environments, they will require cleaning more often. We recommend that you visually inspect your air filter once every 25,000 miles to determine if the screen is still visible.

It is where I live.

12 months of driving around and there is just a tiny bit of brown dust when I tap out the filter.
That's for all my cars.

2 cars I've bought from Sydney, a bigger city, have had loads of black soot in them.
