I have never had any problems spraying the engine. I am usually careful not to spray the electrical connections. I also only spray it when it is cool. You can always put plastic bags atound electrical connections.
if you have an entire afternoon to kill, disconnect your battery, and then spray away! all the electronics in your truck are solid state. you could submerge them in water and they would still work.(after drying off)
once it's all clean, use a compressor to blow dry the fuse boxes and test connectors, and then let it sit a few hours just to be safe. i used to do this weekly. never had an issue.
